Learning Commons

Welcome To The Learning Commons!

PLEASE VISIT OUR LEARNING COMMONS WEBSITE FOR DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE MANY RESOURCES AND PROGRAMS WE PROVIDE: www.abbottshillmc.weebly.com

Abbotts Hill's Learning Commons STRIVES.....

To instill a love of reading in all students

Reading should be on each student’s personal list of things they enjoy doing in their free time.

To encourage and support each student’s self-directed quest for knowledge

Students will become confident in their ability to access information in print and electronic form.

To provide opportunities for each student to use technology to acquire knowledge and share their learning in a meaningful and authentic way

Students will become skillful at using websites and apps that allow them to develop and showcase their learning.

All activities within the Learning Commons will be designed to foster and develop the 4 Cs:

  • Communication

  • Collaboration

  • Critical Thinking

  • Community

All activities within the Learning Commons will address at least one of the American Association of School Librarians Standards Categories which state that learners will use skills and resources to:

  • Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge

  • Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge

  • Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society

  • Pursue personal and aesthetic growth

Follett Destiny Discover

All Fulton County schools use Follett’s Destiny Library Manager to maintain their library's collection. Patrons access the collection using Destiny Discover, a graphics based circulation software that allows them to search for print and digital content. Whether it’s a student or teacher looking for leisure reading/entertainment, materials to support homework or lesson planning, Destiny Discover will help them find what they’re looking for.

Destiny Discover can be accessed by students through Classlink. Look for Destiny Discover on the e-Library tab. This is what it looks like:

WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS!

Volunteers are always needed since the Learning Commons is such a busy place! Volunteers shelve books, create displays, copy flyers, help set-up bulletin boards, cover books with laminate, and assist children in locating resources by using the online catalog.   In order to volunteer, you must first complete the Fulton County Volunteer Process by clicking here

Please email our incredible Learning Commons volunteer coordinator, Meghan Vakulskas, at Meghant76@gmail.com to sign up and ask any questions. We hope to see you soon!

Our METI

Mrs. Dickinson

Email Mrs. Dickinson

Mrs. Dickinson has been the Media Specialist at Abbotts Hill since 2015 and taught third grade at our school for ten years before that! She loves igniting a love of reading in all Pre-K-5th graders and enjoys integrating literature with engaging lessons that align with those being taught in the classrooms.

When not at her home away from home (the Learning Commons) she can be found playing with her supersized rescue dog named Jessie, hiking with her  husband, spending time with friends, traveling, kayaking, and of course, reading! She is immensely proud of her two adult children and their spouses.

Our Parapro

Mrs. Stockman

Mrs. Stockman has loved libraries and books ever since she was a young girl. She considers working in the Learning Commons and helping students to grow in their love of books as some of the best ways to spend time. She lives in Johns Creek with her husband and dog. She has a son in college. In her free time, she enjoys being outside, walking, reading, cooking and is a soccer fan.
